We have an area in our shop that is filled with hides in the tanning process. We collect fresh hides from friends and hunters, some go into a freezer to be worked later and some are fleshed and put onto racks to dry. When the hide has dried properly the hair side is scraped. This scraped hide is removed from the rack and rolled and tied. We now have rawhide available too!
Sometime during the cold winter months we will put these rolls of rawhide into a brain and water solution. Making sure to get the mixture deep in the pores and fibers of the hide. The wet brained hide is then put back on the rack and hand worked until it dries and fluffs out making a beautiful .....Brain Tanned Hide. We will leave some hides in the natural white state and some will be smoked to a golden brown. We sell our hides by figuring the square footage in each hide.
